Students Interview

upskill study of Udayana, Intercultural Communication Summer Course Mair's Feedback

Hi! I'm Mair, a third-year student from Cardiff University in the UK, studying Law and Politics. This past summer, I had the chance to take part in the Upskill Summer Course in Intercultural Communication—a 4-week Upskill short course based in beautiful Bali, Indonesia. Looking back, I can honestly say it’s been one of the most eye-opening and unforgettable experiences of my life.

Why I Chose the Upskill Studies Summer Course

As someone studying Law and Politics, I’ve always been interested in how people communicate across different cultures, and how global identities are shaped. So when I found out about this Upskill study opportunity, I knew I couldn’t pass it up. The idea of diving deep into Balinese culture—not just as a tourist but through academic study and immersion—was really special. From housing and communal living to understanding how society is run, this course offered a perspective that’s not often explored in traditional university settings.

Review and Impressions

This Upskill short course was everything I hoped it would be and more. The structure was a perfect balance of theory and hands-on experiences. We had lectures in English at Udayana University that really expanded my understanding of intercultural communication—how globalization affects identity, how culture shapes our thought patterns, and the importance of being able to communicate across differences.

Every week, we went on field trips across Bali that tied directly into our lessons. I had my tarot cards read, saw a traditional Lontar performance, visited temples and villages, and even met the grandson of a Balinese Puri (royalty!). These were experiences that truly brought the classroom discussions to life.

Daily Life and Academic Growth

Typically, classes ran from 9 to about 12 or 12:30, Monday to Friday. Two days a week we’d go on cultural field trips, and the rest of the time we were free to explore, relax, or work on projects. It never felt rushed—it was immersive without being overwhelming.

One of the highlights for me was presenting my project on the Touristic Ruination of Bali. I explored themes like environmentalism, cultural commodification, and the challenges of maintaining authenticity in a tourist-heavy region. I presented it to students from Mudana University, and the discussion that followed was incredible. We talked openly about our views, and I learned just as much from them as they did from me.

Beyond academic knowledge, I gained so much personally from this Upskill study experience. I’ve made friends from all over the world and developed a stronger ability to communicate with people from different cultural and religious backgrounds. I feel I've grown a lot as a person and I feel like I'm better equipped to be a global citizen now.

One of my favorite parts of the course was learning about the role of Balinese women in society comparing our day-to-day lives was both fascinating and eye-opening. I also loved the more unexpected moments, like our lively classroom sessions, laughing with new friends, and random bits of joy like learning how to say some Balinese words properly.

If you’re considering applying, do it! I’d 100% recommend the Upskill summer course to anyone interested in learning more about intercultural communication in a deep, meaningful, and unforgettable way. You’ll be supported every step of the way, the people are welcoming, and Bali itself is kind, sunny, and absolutely beautiful.
