Muntigunung Village, located in the northeastern part of Bali, Indonesia, is an exemplary model of local initiatives and community-driven development. Through the Muntigunung Development Program (MDP), the village has made strides in water management, sustainable agriculture, education, healthcare, and community-based tourism. The MDP has implemented water catchment systems, promoted permaculture and organic farming, facilitated education programs and scholarships, and developed vocational training initiatives. The village's success stems from strong community participation and empowerment, turning challenges into opportunities for sustainable development while preserving cultural heritage.

The primary purpose of this excursion was to learn and discover further regarding the local initiatives, specifically the Community-Based Total Sanitation (STBM) program. This article aims to inform our readers the significance of this visit and provide a comprehensive report on the notable findings and observations. The excursion to Muntigunung was carefully planned to explore the implementation of the Community-Based Total Sanitation (STBM) program. This program, focused on holistic community development, encompasses key areas such as water source management, economic empowerment, health and sanitation practices, and educational initiatives.

During the visit, several noteworthy observations were made:

  • Water Source Management: Muntigunung has established a sustainable water source program, ensuring access to clean and safe water for the community. This initiative serves as a crucial foundation for overall community development.

  • Economic Empowerment: The region has embraced various entrepreneurial endeavors to uplift the local economy. Initiatives such as cashew and rosella cultivation, palm sugar production, lontar weaving, macrame hammock crafting, and batik making have provided opportunities for income generation and sustainable livelihoods.

  • Health and Sanitation Practices: The Waste Bank program, aimed at waste management and recycling, has been implemented effectively in Muntigunung. Additionally, efforts to promote proper sanitation practices, such as discouraging open defecation and encouraging handwashing with soap, have been undertaken. However, challenges remain in ensuring consistent adherence to these practices, as observed by Henrik and the team.

  • Educational Initiatives: Recognizing the importance of education, Muntigunung has established learning groups for young children. These dedicated educational spaces contribute to the intellectual and cognitive development of the community's youngest members.

Our excursion visit to Muntigunung proved to be an enriching experience, providing us representatives with valuable insights into the local initiatives. The program, with its multifaceted approach to community development, has made significant strides in improving water source management, economic conditions, health and sanitation practices, and educational opportunities in the region. By witnessing these initiatives we gained a deeper understanding of the challenges and successes associated with community-based programs, and how everything takes a long process, determination, strong will and perseverance. This knowledge will hopefully inform our academic pursuits and future endeavors within the field our future study programs to maintain and better every village in every region that has not received enough attention and in need of guidance to continuously promoting the welfare and betterment of the people.
