During the second batch of Upskill Study Intercultural Communication summer course, we had the opportunity to gain profound insights into the impact of globalization during a field lecture in East Bali. This engaging program was facilitated by the lecturers of Udayana's Faculty of Political and Social Sciences Sukma Sushanti, S.S.MSi and Putu Titah Kawitri Resen, S.IP.,M.A, who accompanied the students throughout the trip. It featured two key visits with distinguished speakers who shared their experiences and expertise on how globalization has shaped local communities.

Visit 1: Sangkan Gunung, Karangasem

The first visit took place in the morning at Sangkan Gunung, Karangasem, a picturesque village known for its traditional coconut-based products. The field lecture began with a discussion led by I Nyoman Marta, the founder of She Demen, which is a company specializing in virgin coconut oil (VCO). Mr. Marta introduced the essence of globalization and its contrasting effects on local communities.

I Nyoman Marta’s Presentation

During the fruitful discussion, I Nyoman Marta highlighted the struggles and successes of adapting to globalization while preserving local traditions. Initially a woodcarver in Ubud, Marta returned to his ancestral village to contribute to community development.

Key Points from Marta’s Presentation:

  • Globalization’s Impact: Marta discussed the challenges posed by globalization, including increased competition and the need for continuous learning. He emphasized that while globalization brought opportunities, it also required local entrepreneurs to innovate and adapt.

  • Community Development: Marta also explained how he utilized his skills and knowledge to enhance local production, focusing on the development of virgin coconut oil. His efforts aimed to transform traditional coconut processing into a sustainable and profitable business.

  • Philosophy and Innovation: Marta introduced the concept of "Power of Kepepet," to his project, referring to the drive to succeed despite difficult circumstances. In Balinese philosophy, the coconut tree symbolizes Brahma, the creator god responsible for the universe. This connection is reflected in the belief that every part of the coconut can be utilized, embodying Brahma’s role in creation and sustenance. I Nyoman Marta was inspired by this symbolism, using the coconut to develop a sustainable business, thereby enhancing economic well-being. His wife’s success with weaving further motivated his entrepreneurial efforts, demonstrating how the coconut tree's versatility can contribute to economic growth.

Visit 2: Tirta Gangga Water Palace, Karangasem

After a deep discussion with Mr. I Nyoman Marta, the second visit immediately took place in the afternoon. Participants were taken to Tirta Gangga, a historical water palace and cultural landmark of Karangasem regency. Here, Anak Agung Made Kosalya, a member of Puri Karangasem, discussed the historical and cultural aspects of globalization’s influence on traditional Balinese society.

Key Points from Anak Agung Made Kosalya’s Presentation:

  • Cultural Preservation: Kosalya emphasized the importance of maintaining Balinese cultural heritage amidst the pressures of modernization. He shared how Puri Tirta Gangga remains a symbol of cultural resilience and adaptation. After its initial restoration in 2018, Tirta Gangga remains in the top 10 of Indonesia’s Best Cultural Landmark by TripAdvisor.

  • Tourism and Globalization: The discussion highlighted the effects of tourism on local traditions and how the palace has balanced welcoming international visitors while preserving its cultural significance. Some of the steps to attract global visitors is by creating a website for the cultural site.

  • Future Outlook: Kosalya also mentioned about the future of cultural preservation in the face of ongoing global changes and the role of institutions like Puri Tirta Gangga in fostering cultural understanding and respect.
