Balinese Lontar Preservation Insights, Preserving the Past, Nurturing the Future
upskill's Intercultural Communication Summer Program
Balinese culture is renowned for its rich heritage, and at the heart of this heritage lies the ancient manuscripts known as 'Lontar'. These palm-leaf manuscripts have preserved centuries of Balinese wisdom, knowledge, and traditions throughout many important eras. Understanding the importance of preserving this invaluable cultural treasure, upskill Bali's Intercultural Communication Summer Program invites our global students to partake on a journey to explore and shed light on the significance of Lontar preservation through two different on-field sessions.
The Significance of Lontar
In the first session of the program, participants delved into the theory and importance of Lontar. The session served as an introduction to the world of Lontar and its preservation. Richard Ginting, the program's coordinator for Lontar Preservation, guided the students through the relevance of this ancient art form.
Session 1: Meeting Lontar Expert
One of the program's highlights was the opportunity to meet Mr. Hadi, a Lontar expert from the Faculty of Humanities at Udayana University. Mr. Hadi possesses a deep understanding of Lontar, its history, and its significance in Balinese culture. He not only shared his knowledge but also demonstrated the art of reading, writing, and translating Lontar. Students were captivated by his insights and the practical demonstration of this ancient script.
Session 2: Fruitful Trip to Puri Kauhan, Ubud
The second part of the program involved an enriching field trip to Puri Kauhan in Ubud. Puri Kauhan is an institution deeply rooted in preserving Balinese culture and heritage. Anak Agung Bagus Ari Brahmanta, the head of the Puri Kauhan Ubud Foundation, warmly welcomed the participants and provided introductory remarks.
Puri Kauhan's commitment to cultural preservation was evident as they opened their doors to researchers and scholars in the 1950s, offering valuable insights into Balinese culture, including art, gardens, and sustainable tourism. In particular, sustainable development tourism has been a focus since 1951.
Expert Insights at Puri Kauhan
During the visit to Puri Kauhan, participants had the privilege of engaging with Lontar expert Gede Agus Darma Putra, who also serves as a lecturer at the University of Hindu Bali. His expertise in reading, translating, and digitizing Lontar manuscripts added depth to the students' understanding of this ancient art form.
upskill's Commitment to Practical Learning
Upskill Bali's Summer Course program has always emphasized outdoor experiences over mere classroom learning. The program takes students beyond theory, ensuring they gain hands-on experience with the study material. In the case of Lontar preservation, this meant bringing students face-to-face with experts, visiting cultural institutions like Puri Kauhan, and fostering reflection discussions about the importance of preserving Lontar manuscripts.

Balinese Lontar preservation is not merely an academic pursuit; it is a vital part of safeguarding the cultural heritage of the island. Through upskill’s Intercultural Communication short course program, participants are expected to gain a deeper understanding of the significance of Lontar and its preservation and how much we must always learn from our roots and history.
As we look to the future, it is clear that preserving the past is essential for nurturing the future. Balinese Lontar manuscripts are not just historical artifacts; they are living documents that continue to shape the identity and culture of Bali. Upskill Bali, through our extensive summer program, will ensure the knowledge and appreciation of Lontar preservation are being passed on to the next generation of Bali and beyond. This invaluable heritage deserves to remains alive and thriving.
