Study Indonesian Language in Bali:
Applied Language and Culture Program by Upskill at Udayana University
5-6 minutes reading
The Upskill Study Program continues to expand its academic direction in Bali through a new collaboration with the Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University under the Indonesian Literature Study Program. This development marks a deliberate step into the field of language and cultural studies, complementing existing program areas that have focused on environmental science, marine conservation, and social engagement.
At the center of this expansion is the Applied Indonesian Language and Culture Interaction (AILCI) program, a newly developed course designed to introduce participants to Bahasa Indonesia through structured, context-based learning. The program will run its first intake from 15 to 26 June 2026, with a flexible format that allows participation from one to four weeks, depending on academic needs and institutional requirements.
This flexibility reflects a broader shift in short-term mobility design, where programs are expected to accommodate different levels of engagement while maintaining academic depth and coherence.

Language as Practice, Not Abstraction
The AILCI program is built on a simple premise: language becomes meaningful when it is used.
Rather than approaching Bahasa Indonesia as a purely grammatical system, the course places communication within its social and cultural context. Participants engage with language through structured interaction across the university environment, moving between classroom instruction and guided practice in real settings such as campus cafeterias, study areas, and administrative spaces.
This approach draws on established perspectives in applied linguistics, where language learning is understood as a social process shaped by interaction. Michael Halliday argued that language is a “social semiotic,” developing through meaning-making in context (Halliday, 1978). Similarly, Claire Kramsch highlights that language and culture are inseparable, with communication shaped by shared symbolic systems and social practice (Kramsch, 1993). Work in intercultural communicative competence by Michael Byram further reinforces that effective language learning requires understanding social values, behaviors, and interaction norms alongside linguistic form (Byram, 1997).
Within this framework, AILCI positions Bahasa Indonesia not simply as a subject to be studied, but as a medium through which participants begin to understand Indonesian society itself.
A Campus-Based Learning Model
Delivered on-site at Udayana University in Denpasar, the program integrates intensive morning instruction with supervised, campus-based language practice. This model allows participants to apply vocabulary and conversational structures in controlled yet authentic environments, bridging the gap between learning and use.
The involvement of Indonesian students as language partners strengthens this approach, creating a peer-to-peer dynamic that supports natural interaction while maintaining academic structure. This design reflects a growing recognition in international education that short-term programs can offer depth when learning is intentionally structured around interaction and reflection, rather than passive exposure.
Who Is This Program For
The Applied Indonesian Language and Culture Interaction (AILCI) program is designed for participants who seek to engage with Indonesia through language as a practical and cultural tool.
The program is particularly relevant for students and early-career participants in fields such as:
Indonesian Studies and Southeast Asian Studies
Intercultural Communication and Global Studies
Anthropology, Sociology, and Cultural Studies
International Relations and Political Science
Development Studies and Community-Based Research
Tourism, Hospitality, and Cultural Management
It also complements disciplines where regional understanding and communication are increasingly important, including environmental studies, sustainability, and field-based research involving community interaction.
While prior knowledge of Bahasa Indonesia is not required, the program is suited for individuals interested in developing functional communication skills within real social contexts, and who value learning through interaction, observation, and guided practice.
Participants may join as part of a university program, as an academic elective, or as an independent learning experience. The flexible one to four-week structure allows institutions and individuals to align the program with their academic calendar, credit requirements, or personal learning goals.

A New Academic Direction
The development of AILCI represents an expansion of the Upskill Study Program into the humanities, specifically into Indonesian language and literature as a field of academic engagement.
Over the past years, Upskill programs have focused on disciplines such as tropical biology, marine science, environmental sustainability, and community-based development. This collaboration introduces a complementary dimension that addresses language, communication, and cultural understanding as foundational components of global learning.
The program has been welcomed at faculty level, reflecting a shared commitment to strengthening international academic collaboration and creating meaningful entry points into Indonesian studies.
As preparations continue toward the first intake, AILCI is positioned as a recurring offering within the Upskill Study framework, open to students, researchers, and individuals seeking a structured introduction to Bahasa Indonesia and its cultural context. By combining applied language learning with guided interaction, the program offers a focused and academically grounded way to engage with Indonesia, beginning with communication and expanding through experience.
