Your classroom: Bali - Where Language Lives Before It's Learned
)
Bali’s cultural and linguistic landscape is inseparable from its environment. Language is not learned only in classrooms, but in the rhythms of markets, ceremonies, and community life shaped by the island’s deep relationship with nature. While mass tourism has transformed daily life and placed pressure on local traditions, students in this program experience Bali from a different vantage point: one that foregrounds cultural integrity, linguistic nuance, and community perspectives. Through weekly field lectures you will not only study Indonesian grammar and vocabulary, but also encounter living expressions of concepts such as Tri Hita Karana, the Balinese philosophy of harmony between people, nature, and spirituality. From traditional markets to communal meals and heritage sites, the program invites you to observe how language, culture, and identity interact in real time challenging assumptions, expanding your Asia-literacy, and revealing a Bali rarely seen by visitors who remain at the surface.
