This practical summer course provides 4 weeks of knowledge, successful practices, field trips and case studies.

Every week, we will go on a variety of field trips across Bali, which will neatly tie into the theoretical lectures of that week.

Language: English

Our well-structured lectures, which are held in English at Udayana University, will help you gain expertise on sustainability.

Credit Points: 6 ECTS

Within this short course you can achieve up to 6 ECTS credit points awarded by Udayana University in Bali.

What makes this course a great choice?

Balinese traditional and complementary medicine, known as Usada Bali, is one of the prominent aspects of Balinese culture. Balinese traditional healing practices use natural herbs and spices, holistic therapies and ancient wisdom to cure physical and mental illness. The course introduces the basic concept, some techniques and practices of Balinese traditional therapies including Usada Bali based herbal remedies, Balinese massage, energy and spiritual healing through yoga and meditation.

Course Objectives

The course aims to:

  1. Provide students with an introduction to Balinese traditional and complementary medicine.

  2. Provide students with an introduction to some techniques and practices of Balinese traditional and complementary medicine.

  3. Provide students with experiences to perform some of Usada Bali-base herbal preparations and formulations.

  1. The philosophies of traditional and complementary medicine in Indonesia,

  2. Efficacy, safety and quality of herbal medicine

  3. Traditional Medicine Therapies (TMT)

  4. The philosophy and history of Usada Bali I

  5. General procedure of herbal medicines preparation

  6. Production of herb simplisia

  7. An overview of bioactive compounds of medicinal plants with regard to their uses in traditional and complementary medicine

  8. An overview of methods generally used for isolation of bioactive compounds from medicinal plants

  9. Production of herbal extracts

  10. Herbal medicine formulation I (for oral)

  11. Herbal medicine formulation II (for topical administration)

  12. Production of herbal products: herbal drink

  13. Production of herbal products: massage products (oil, scrub, aromatherapy)

  14. Site visit

Ulun Danu Bratan Temple

This scenic water temple is located on the shores of Lake Bratan in mountainous Central Bali. The lake's water is considered holy in the Hindu beliefs.

During this retreat you will earn from some of the most experienced yoga masters on the island, what this practice can do for your mind and body.

Visiting Indonesia is always a culinary journey, as well. To make sure that you can recreate some of your favorite dishes, we will join a Balinese cooking class.

Be it traditional Indonesian massages, or famous herbal drinks such as Jamu, in Bali you will find experts in all fields related to traditional & complementary medicine. Within this short course you will have several opportunities to experience the Balinese approach to health and healing, through theoretical learning, as well as hands-on activities directed by local experts. Dive into this unique and effective approach to healing that is deeply rooted in the island's rich cultural heritage.
