Surfing in Bali

One of the most notorious beach breaks is Kuta Beach. It is followed by beaches nearby; Tuban Beach, Legian Beach, and Seminyak Beach. Canggu beach, a 20 minutes drive from Seminyak, is currently gaining more popularity to surfers, not only due to the waves but also its hipster lifestyle. Even though you most likely won’t be the only one in the water, you will not regret it as it offers a beautiful sunset view while enjoying the sport.

For intermediate and advanced surfers, who would like to avoid the crowds of Kuta and Seminyak, it is worth it to check for other spots up North along the West Coast. You will find less known waves breaking over beach or rocks such as Yeh Gangga, Balian or Medewi. The villages in these areas are less known to tourists and may remind you of a more traditional Bali.

When you are an advanced surfer, there are many challenging surf breaks on the Bukit peninsula to be explored. The most notorious surf spots are located in Uluwatu area, such as Dreamland, Padang-Padang, Balangan, Uluwatu. The waves in these spots usually break over a sharp reef and are therefore not suitable for first time surfers. But also as an experienced surfer it is always a good idea to get local knowledge of the spot before jumping in.

When you want to explore the East Coast of Bali, Turtle Island, Hyatt Reef, Keramas Beach or Padang Galak should be definitely on your list. Especially during wet season form December to April many surfers escape the rubbish and windy beaches on the West Coast and accept the longer drive to the East Coast.
