New summer course 2024
upskill study program Sport & Environment Welcome Week!
This July, Upskill Study is launching its first independent Sport and Environment Summer Course, a four-week program designed to explore the intersection of sports and environmental stewardship. Set against the vibrant backdrop of Bali, this course promises a blend of education, adventure, and cultural immersion.
Participants, hailing from the University of Kent, UK, and the University of Technology Sydney, Australia, are primarily aged 22 and major in Sport & Exercise, Health, and Art History. This diverse group will engage in a comprehensive curriculum that includes lectures, field visits, workshops, and sporting activities, aimed at providing a holistic understanding of environmental issues, sustainable practices, and the influential role of sports in fostering a healthy planet and community.
Day 1: Honorary Welcome and Engaging Activities
The first week sets the stage with an introduction to the relationship between sports and the environment in Bali. On the first day (Monday), students were greeted with 'Nasi Tumpeng,' a traditional Indonesian dish featuring a cone-shaped mound of rice surrounded by various sides, symbolizing gratitude and honor. This staple cuisine is often used in welcoming celebrations to honor guests. The day continued with orientation activities, a welcome breakfast, and a warm introduction to the Upskill team, followed by intensive Stand Up Paddle (SUP) training at Kelan Beach, guided by certified instructor Ben Simanjuntak. This training not only focused on technical skills but also emphasized safety and environmental considerations.
Day 2 - 4: Group Discussions and Practical Sessions
The following days were packed with a mix of practical sessions, group discussions, and lectures. On Tuesday, SUP training continued at Kelan Beach, and in the afternoon, participants engaged in practical sessions and group discussions. Wednesday featured more SUP theory and practical sessions, highlighted by a guest lecture from local surfing legend Piping Irawan, who shared insights into Balinese surfing culture.
Thursday offered an early morning surf session with Indo Pure Joy in Kuta, followed by a visit to the Turtle Conservation Center in Serangan, where students learned about current coastal environmental issues. Friday included a visit to Yayasan Karang Lestari in Pemuteran for lectures and hands-on activities related to coral reef conservation and Biorock technology, led by coral reef expert Komang Astika. The day concluded with group activities and snorkeling or diving sessions.
Day 5-7: Weekend Cultural Excursion
The weekend provided a cultural experience. On Saturday morning, students participated in a cleansing ceremony at Pemuteran temple, a significant cultural activity that offers a deeper understanding of Balinese spirituality. The afternoon was reserved for rest at their accommodations. Sunday featured a cultural workshop at Payangan Village, where participants toured traditional houses, learned to make offerings, and received Balinese dance lessons before returning to their accommodations to rest.
Prominent Guest Speakers
The program features esteemed speakers and instructors, including Ben Simanjuntak, founder of Priority SUP; Piping Irawan, a pioneer of Balinese surfing; Komang Astika, a coral and dive expert from Yayasan Karang Lestari; and Made Sukanta, the manager of the Turtle Conservation and Education Center. These experts provided valuable knowledge and firsthand experience in their respective fields, enriching the students' understanding and engagement with both sports and environmental conservation.
Upskill Study's Sport and Environment Summer Course offers a unique blend of education, practical experience, and cultural engagement. This program not only equips students with valuable knowledge and skills but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the intricate balance between sports and the environment. We look very much forward to our upcoming weeks of cultural immersion, wellness practices, and environmental stewardship. Students will explore Balinese philosophy, practice yoga, and engage in community service while learning about sustainable agriculture, massage techniques, and island planning. Our curriculum culminates in a deep dive into wellness practices and final presentations. Stay tuned for our upcoming weeks summer course updates!
