STUDY TROPICAL BIOLOGY AND MARINE CONSERVATION
Module 1: Tropical Marine Ecology (5 ECTS)
This course will introduce and discuss in a general and particular level (i.e.: Indonesia), about the ecology of the main tropical marine ecosystems, such as coral reefs, seagrass beds and mangrove forests. It will include the function of those ecosystems and the interaction between them. Also the interactions and association between organisms and their habitat as well as the interaction with environmental factors which make up the ecological system in tropical oceans.
Module 2: Microbiology and Fish Disease (5 ECTS)
This course examines mainly on the causes of fish parasites and fish diseases. It discusses both non-pathogenic diseases (environment, feed) and pathogenic diseases (bacterial, fungal and virus). Further comprehension on epidemiology of fish diseases, diagnosis of this diseases and laboratory diagnosis (histopathology examination). Another main topic for this subject is the prevention of fish diseases. Specific knowledge on immunostimulants, anti-bacterial substances from natural bioactive, and chemicals and herbs used for treatment of disease. Students are expected to partake in fish parasites identification practice; which will be conducted by having fish samples from Kedonganan fish market. Student’s task is to identify the prevalence and intensity of the fish infections and to identify the abundance of parasites present in the fish.
Module 3: Biodiversity Conservation & Ecotourism (5 ECTS)
The course is about the conservation of biodiversity through development of ecotourism. The course will cover: (a) ecotourism definition, principles, and criteria; (b) biodiversity conservation, community empowerment, and poverty alleviation through ecotourism; (c) Balinese life philosophy of the Tri Hita Karana (THK); (d) ecotourism products, (e) terrestrial ecotourism; (f) marine ecotourism; (g) agroi-ecotourism; (h) eco lodge, (i) case study in ecotourism and biodiversity conservation organizations. In the practical level there will be several field trips, which may include, but not limited to: Pemuteran (marine conservation and tourism programs), Tahura Ngurah Rai (mangrove conservation & mangrove tour), Subak Sembung (agro-ecotourism), Sanur or Nusa Dua (benthic organism, bio indicator, trekking, bird watching, etc.), Udayana lodge (eco-lodge), Gianyar Botanical Garden (Kebun Raya Gianyar) (plant diversity and traditional way of forest conservation) and Kemenuh Butterfly Park.
Module 4: Marine Pollution (5 ECTS)
This course concern on some aspects of Marine pollution and marine ecosystems destruction. It therefore aims to study: Oceanography and Water quality (Physical, Chemical and biological), Productivity, Global warming, Destructive fishing (catching and pearl clam culture), Oil pollution, Fish feeding pollution (Cage and pond), Physical destruction (tourism activity), IMTA (Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture). Field study to: Nusa Dua Lagoon, City Water Installation (Instalasi PDAM) Pemogan and Marine hatchery (Gerokgak).
Module 5: Ichthyology (5 ECTS)
The main subject of ichthyology is about any aspect of fish, including taxonomy, systematics, and how to identify the fish. Characters of fish will cover meristic and morphometric (scales, fins, total length of body, etc). Another aspect of fish investigated is about reproduction, which includes: oocyte maturation, maturity stages, gonado somatic index (GSI), gonad maturation level, fecundity and gonad anatomy and physiology. Feeding behavior is also a topic covered in this study. It consists of food in relation with environmental aspects of life of fish, i.e dissolved oxygen, chemical oxygen demand, pH, temperature, etc, and the culture of fish. Practical work of Ichthyology may include: (1) Identify a number of fish from Kedonganan market fish base on their morphology and meristic characteristics; (2) Determine ovarian development and maturity stages through describing the ovary, gonado somatic index (GSI) and fecundity; (3) Histological examination of the ovary or gonads; (4) Determining Nutrition Value Coefficient (NVC) of fish in Estuary Dam, Denpasar.
Module 6: Tropical Horticulture (5 ECTS)
Horticulture is the art and science of the cultivation of plants. This course will focus on tropical environmental and physiology of horticultural crops, propagation, and production system, breeding practice, processing and marketing of fruits, vegetables and ornamental plants, and also temperate zone crops adapted to grow in the tropics. This course will include practical class and field trip to central production of ornamental plants, vegetable and native fruits in Bali.
Module 7: Ethnobiology (5 ECTS)
Ethnobiology subject covers the interaction between humans and plants, humans with animals and humans with their ecosystems in the perspective of their culture. This subject includes the definition of ethnobiology and its application in human life. Indonesia and particularly the Bali ethnicity will be in particular focus on this lecture. This subject also discusses the diversity of plants and animals that have been utilized ethnically, traditionally, and culturally by the Balinese community as medicine, food, praying and among other cultural activities. The use of bio-pesticides as an emerging issue will be covered as well. The practical component propose to visit the local communities around Bali and learn about their ethnic understanding of the plants and animals used in their culture. Other activities may also include, but are not limited to observing traditional food production, traditional herbs used for spa and wellness industries, bio pesticides making and traditional clothing dyes/coloring materials.
Module 8: Student Project (8 ECTS)
Students will be assigned to a specific research topic that has a significant role in marine and tropical biology research in Indonesia. This topic could be part of an ongoing project or could be independent. It has to be acknowledged from a professor as well as supervised from a professor or a specialist within the field. Upon completion of the research, an academic paper has to be finished and its original results need to be presented during the course of this seminar. The progress of the project will be discussed with your professor on a weekly basis. Furthermore, the progress has to be in line with the weekly targets that have been defined in the beginning of the seminar.
Module 9: Bahasa Indonesia (2 ECTS)
Bahasa Indonesia is the official language in Indonesia and is spoken from a majority of Indonesians next to a variety of different dialects which vary locally. In this language course you will learn the basics of the Indonesian language, in order to be able to immerse into Bali’s culture and life. This course mostly focuses on teaching the students to interact/communicate in Indonesian. Besides that, the students will also learn some basics of grammatical/structural rules.
Where You Will Study
You will study at the Faculty of Natural Sciences & Mathematics, University of Udayana in Bali. The Jimbaran campus is located in the southern Bukit Peninsular. It will take you about 20 to 30 minutes by scooter to Kuta or Seminyak, or 45 minutes by taxi (depending on the traffic).
When To Arrive?
The semester starts on a Monday. It is recommended to arrive a couple of days before to get used to the climate and get used to driving the scooter in typical Indonesian traffic.
